On China and the freedom to be a monkey

A banana, Sun Wukong, and crypto-nomads: how Ape culture explains Chinese freedom from the inside.

I work between systems: innovation clusters, technology corridors. All of it makes sense right up until you notice that the real assembly happens not in theory, but in how people negotiate reality over a cup of tea, in a WeChat chat, or through a random banana placed on the table.

In Shenzhen, in one of the many spaces that smell of coffee, plastic, and ambition, I consciously saw “Ape’s culture” for the first time. Not as a metaphor, but as a working coordinate system.

The monkey in China is intelligence that doesn’t ask permission. Agility that isn’t performed but appears at the right moment. Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, is the only hero of Journey to the West who completed the path without ceasing to be himself. He didn’t fit into the hierarchy — he outplayed it, saving face and earning a name.

Today’s Chinese geeks, digital nomads, Web3 communities — they are his mental heirs. They don’t flee the system. They exist within it on their own terms. They have three wallets, two phones, one banana, and a clear understanding: freedom is not the absence of boundaries, but the art of moving inside them with the grace of a monkey.

The banana here is not food. It’s a sign. In Chinese culture, through its characters, the banana is linked to worship, to a gesture of respect. In ape culture and the crypto underground, it became a symbol of simple, almost brazen pleasure: I’m here, I’m good, I don’t owe anyone anything. It’s that same brat vibe, only in a Chinese lens — quiet, without screaming, but with absolute inner confidence.

My teenage kids teach me this every day. Freedom is not when someone lets you go. Freedom is when you choose which game to play and keep the ability to laugh at the rules, even when you’re inside. “Apes” — everyone lives in this paradigm. They don’t ask “how do I break free.” They ask “how do I assemble reality so there’s room in it for both my banana and my contract.”

My project YTTS 耀途Solutions does deep immersions into synthetic innovation environments. In China and beyond, everywhere.
